The Walled City is the oldest part of Lahore and the best place to understand the city’s history. Its narrow lanes, old havelis and bazaars are still lived in and worked in, so a visit is as much about daily life as monuments.
The Lahore Fort and the Badshahi Mosque sit at its edge, and Wazir Khan Mosque, known for its tile work and frescoes, is inside. Historic gates such as Delhi Gate and Lohari Gate mark the old city boundary. Food Street near Fort Road is popular for traditional dishes, especially in the evening.
Go on foot, wear comfortable shoes and aim for the morning or late afternoon, when it is cooler and the light is better. Lanes are narrow and busy, so keep valuables secure and be ready to cover your head and remove your shoes when entering mosques.
